Paper Topics for the Second Paper

Paper Topics II

due November 20

This paper is a thought paper, rather than a research paper. This means that you must bring in your own ideas, analyze the topic, and BACK UP your assertions. Whatever topic you choose, please remember to define your terms (e.g. "identity"), state a definite hypothesis, and bring in a variety of relevant and detailed examples to support your argument.

You may also create your own topic, but please check with me first.

1. Identity and the construction of it / search for it are major issues in contemporary society. Compare the search for identity in Ghost in the Shell and Perfect Blue, or in Evangelion and Revolutionary Girl Utena.

2. Compare the role of technology in American science fiction film with its role in Japanese animation. Does one country seem to be more negative/positive than the other, or is it more complex than that? Use at least one specific text from each country.

3. Apocalyptic themes are very important in anime. Compare the treatment of the end of the world in at least one specific anime with its treatment in an American apocalyptic film.

4. In Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke, I suggest that male/female relationships in pornographic animation do not always show simple male dominance over female victims. Do you agree? Discuss, using at least two examples from Japanese pornographic animation.
